Michele Papavasiliou
Will be at the
Washington International Print Fair
Michele Papavasiliou practices hanga, the traditional woodcut technique devoloped in Japan many centuries ago. This method is characterized by the use of water-based inks and handmade Japapnes paper. Instead of using a printing presss to transfer the ink from the wood to the paper, a special hand-heald tool called a "baren" is used. In the United States today, hanga is taught and produced by only a few artists who apply this technique to their individual style. Ms. Papavasiliou has studied hanga for over 10 years. She also incorporates photo-silkscreen into some of her prints, superimposing type and images of human figures over abstract forms.
Ms. Papavasiliou, a New Jersey resident, received a B.A. in visual art from Barnard College and a Master's Degree in studio art from New York University. She also studied fine art and art history in France and Italy. Ms. Papavasiliou has been in numerous group shows and has had six solo exhibitions. Her work is in many private collections both nationwide and abroad.
